Optimist Club of Calgary Essay Contest Winners 2017 

Alexis Kelly, a grade 12 student at Lord Beaverbrook High School won the 2017 Club Essay Contest. The topic was “Chasing Optimism in the Face of Challenges.”

Alexis’ essay was submitted into the AMS&NW Optimist District Essay Contest, which she won along with a $2,500 scholarship.

Other Club 2017 Essay Contest winners were:

  • 2nd place was won by Avanti Karkhanis, a grade 12 student at Sir Winston Churchill High School.
  • 3rd place was won by Ye-Jean Park, a grade 10 student at Webber Academy.

Optimist Club of Calgary Oratorical Contest Winners 2017

The Club Oratorical Contest was held on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at the Southwood United Church.

The topic was “What the World Gains From Optimism.” The Club Oratorical Contest winners were:

  • Emily Grant, 1st place girls place
  • Ye-Jean Park, 2nd place girls
  • Rachel Hughes, 3rd place girls
  • Ahmed Mahamoud, 1st place boys
  • Ahmed El Gendy, 2nd place boys
  • Eric Li, 3rd place boys

Ye-Jean Park went on to win the District Oratorical contest and a $2,500 scholarship.

After winning the District Oratorical contest and a $2,500 scholarship, Ye-Jean Park went on to win the Optimist Great Plains Regional Oratorical Contest and an additional $5000 scholarship.

She then competed in the OI World Championship Oratorical Contest, where she won third place and another $5,000 scholarship.

That’s a total of $12,500 in scholarships!
