DESCRIPTION:Attention all Students –  Here’s your chance to win a Scholarship!\nCONTEST APPLICATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED                 \nThe Optimist Club of Calgary is excited to announce the return of its Essay Scholarship Contest for the 2025–26 school year!  This inspiring opportunity is open to students who are under 19 years of age as of October 1\, 2025. \nTo enter\, students are invited to craft a 700–800-word essay on the theme: “How My Acts of Service Help Me Understand What My Community Means to Me.” So sharpen those pencils\, share your story\, and let your creative writing skills shine! \nSubmissions will be accepted until January 10\, 2026. \nTo apply\, download the Oratorical Contest Application described below\, complete it\, and submit it via e-mail to Bob Steele\, Essay Contest Chair\, at ironmanb@telusplanet.net with the Subject “Essay Contest”. The entry must include a completed application form\, signed by the entrant and his/her parent\, a copy of proof of age\, and a brief statement of the school and grade attended. Entries will be acknowledged as received\, and there will be no limit on entries. There will be a Zoom meeting between Mr. Steele and entrants in December to discuss the rules; it is recommended that entrants wait for that meeting before writing their essay. \nCONTEST APPLICATION FORM:   25-26_Essay_Application \nThere are medals and cash prizes of $300\, $200\, and $100 for the top three essays. The best essay will be entered into the Scholarship contest. All Optimist clubs in Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, and Montana may enter this contest. One post-secondary scholarship valued at $2\,500 is awarded in this contest. \nAny questions regarding the contest should be directed to Bob Steele\, Contest Chair\, via email at ironmanb@telusplanet.net. \n  \nMORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE OPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL ESSAY SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST    \nOptimist International sponsors the Essay contest to allow young people to write about their own opinions regarding the world in which they live.  The approach can encompass a young person’s personal experience\, the experience of their country\, or a more historical perspective.  In addition to developing written expression skills\, participants also have the opportunity to win a college scholarship. \nIn the past eleven Essay Contests\, the entrant from our club has earned the $2\,500 scholarship for our District six times. \nFor more information on the Essay Contest\, check out our website at https://optimistyyc.org/contests/ or the Optimist International Website by CLICKING HERE. \n

The contest is limited to a maximum of 10 participants. DESCRIPTION:Attention all Optimist Members\, Contest Participants\, Family Members\, and Friends!\nHere’s your chance to show your support for young\, aspiring students!  Join us for the Optimist Club of Calgary’s 2026 Oratorical Scholarship Contest Competition on Saturday\, January 24th\, 2026\, from 12:30 PM to 4 PM.  Optimists\, family\, friends\, teachers\, fellow students\, and the general public are welcome to join us and watch the competition.   It is free.\nTen participants under the age of 19 who have already pre-registered will research\, write\, and present a four- to five-minute speech on the topic “The Moment I\nRealized I Belonged — My Definition of Community.” \nLocation:  Fish Creek Library (across the street on the east side of Southcenter Mall). \nThe top two participants in this contest will be invited to compete at the 2026 Alberta Regional Optimist Oratorical Contest\, which will be held sometime in April.  For more information about the Oratorical contests\, please see below. \nHope to see you on January 24th! \n \n  \nINFORMATION ON THE OPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL ORATORICAL SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST \nBeginning in 1928\, the Optimist International Oratorical Scholarship Contest has become the longest-running program of Optimist International. The contest is designed for young people to gain experience in public speaking and provide them with an opportunity to compete for multiple post-secondary scholarships with a pre-assigned topic. \nThere are various levels of competition as outlined below: \n\nOPTIMIST CLUB OF CALGARY IN-PERSON CONTEST – Our club contest will be held on January 24th\, 2026\, at the Fish Creek Library.  1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place participants receive a cash award and a certificate.  1st and 2nd place participants get the opportunity to compete in the Zone Oratorical Contest mentioned below.\nALBERTA ZONE CONTEST – This contest will be held in April 2026 (date and location to be determined) and will include participants from across Alberta. 1st and 2nd place participants will receive a certificate and the opportunity to compete in the District Oratorical Contest mentioned below.\nDISTRICT 13 ORATORICAL CONTEST (Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, Montana\, and NW Wyoming) –  This contest will be held during the 3rd Quarter District Meeting on May 16th\, 2026\, in Saskatoon (location yet to be determined).  There will be 6 participants competing at this event – two participants each from Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, and Montana/Northern Wyoming.  1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place participants will receive post-secondary scholarships from the Canadian Children’s Optimist Foundation of $2\,500\, $1\,500\, and $1\,000\, respectively. The participant who places 1st will also be invited to the Great Plains Regional Oratorical Contest mentioned below.\nGREAT PLAINS REGIONAL CONTEST – This contest will be held in July 2026 at Optimist International Headquarters in St. Louis\, Missouri.  The 1st place participant receives a $5\,000 scholarship and the opportunity to compete in the World Oratorical Contest mentioned below.
