DESCRIPTION:Attention all Optimist Members\, Contest Participants\, Family Members\, and Friends!\nHere’s your chance to show your support for young\, aspiring students!  Join us for the Optimist Club of Calgary’s 2026 Oratorical Scholarship Contest Competition on Saturday\, January 24th\, 2026\, from 12:30 PM to 4 PM.  Optimists\, family\, friends\, teachers\, fellow students\, and the general public are welcome to join us and watch the competition.   It is free.\nTen participants under the age of 19 who have already pre-registered will research\, write\, and present a four- to five-minute speech on the topic “The Moment I\nRealized I Belonged — My Definition of Community.” \nLocation:  Fish Creek Library (across the street on the east side of Southcenter Mall). \nThe top two participants in this contest will be invited to compete at the 2026 Alberta Regional Optimist Oratorical Contest\, which will be held sometime in April.  For more information about the Oratorical contests\, please see below. \nHope to see you on January 24th! \n \n  \nINFORMATION ON THE OPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL ORATORICAL SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST \nBeginning in 1928\, the Optimist International Oratorical Scholarship Contest has become the longest-running program of Optimist International. The contest is designed for young people to gain experience in public speaking and provide them with an opportunity to compete for multiple post-secondary scholarships with a pre-assigned topic. \nThere are various levels of competition as outlined below: \n\nOPTIMIST CLUB OF CALGARY IN-PERSON CONTEST – Our club contest will be held on January 24th\, 2026\, at the Fish Creek Library.  1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place participants receive a cash award and a certificate.  1st and 2nd place participants get the opportunity to compete in the Zone Oratorical Contest mentioned below.\nALBERTA ZONE CONTEST – This contest will be held in April 2026 (date and location to be determined) and will include participants from across Alberta. 1st and 2nd place participants will receive a certificate and the opportunity to compete in the District Oratorical Contest mentioned below.\nDISTRICT 13 ORATORICAL CONTEST (Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, Montana\, and NW Wyoming) –  This contest will be held during the 3rd Quarter District Meeting on May 16th\, 2026\, in Saskatoon (location yet to be determined).  There will be 6 participants competing at this event – two participants each from Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, and Montana/Northern Wyoming.  1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place participants will receive post-secondary scholarships from the Canadian Children’s Optimist Foundation of $2\,500\, $1\,500\, and $1\,000\, respectively. The participant who places 1st will also be invited to the Great Plains Regional Oratorical Contest mentioned below.\nGREAT PLAINS REGIONAL CONTEST – This contest will be held in July 2026 at Optimist International Headquarters in St. Louis\, Missouri.  The 1st place participant receives a $5\,000 scholarship and the opportunity to compete in the World Oratorical Contest mentioned below. That tournament is known as THE OPTIMIST and is one of the largest and best-known junior golf tournaments in the world. DESCRIPTION:Attention all Optimist Members\, Contest Participants\, Family Members\, and Friends!\nHere’s your chance to show your support for young\, aspiring students!  Join us for the Optimist Club of Calgary’s 2025 Oratorical Scholarship Contest Competition on Saturday\, March 15th\, 2025 from 1 PM to 4 PM.  Optimists\, family\, friends\, teachers\, fellow students\, and the general public are welcome to join us and watch the competition.   It is free. \nTen under 18 participants who have already pre-registered will research\, write\, and present a four-to-five-minute speech on the topic “How Optimism Has Guided Me Through Trying Times.” \nLocation:  Fish Creek Library (across the street on the east side of Southcenter Mall). \nThe top two participants in this contest will be invited to compete at the 2025 Alberta Regional Optimist Oratorical Contest which will be held sometime in April.  For more information about the Oratorical contests\, please see below. \nHope to see you on March 15th\, 2025! \n \nINFORMATION ON THE OPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL ORATORICAL SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST \nBeginning in 1928\, the Optimist International Oratorical Scholarship Contest has become the longest-running program of Optimist International  The contest is designed for young people to gain experience in public speaking and provide them with an opportunity to compete for multiple post-secondary scholarships with a pre-assigned topic. \nThere are various levels of competition as outlined below: \n\nOPTIMIST CLUB OF CALGARY IN PERSON CONTEST – Our club contest will be held on March 15th\, 2025 at the Fish Creek Library.  1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place participants receive a cash award and a certificate.  1st and 2nd place participants get the opportunity to compete in the Zone Oratorical Contest mentioned below.\nALBERTA ZONE CONTEST – This contest will be held in April 2025 (date and location to be determined) and will include participants from across Alberta. 1st and 2nd place participants will receive a certificate and the opportunity to compete in the District Oratorical Contest mentioned below.\nDISTRICT 13 ORATORICAL CONTEST (Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, Montana\, and NW Wyoming) –  This contest will be held during the 3rd Quarter District Meeting on May 3rd\, 2025 starting at 10:30 AM at the Holiday Inn & Suites South in Red Deer\, Alberta.  There will be 6 participants competing at this event – two participants each from Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, and Montana/Northern Wyoming.  1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place participants will receive post-secondary scholarships from the Canadian Children’s Optimist Foundation of $2\,500\, $1\,500\, and $1\,000 respectively. The participant who places 1st will also be invited to the Great Plains Regional Oratorical Contest mentioned below.\nGREAT PLAINS REGIONAL CONTEST – This contest will be held on July 17\, 2025\, at Optimist International Headquarters in St. Louis\, Missouri.  The 1st place participant receives a $5\,000 scholarship and the opportunity to compete in the World Oratorical Contest mentioned below. DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating Optimist Day on February 6th\, 2025!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDID YOU KNOW? …   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nScience has shown that optimists are healthier\, happier\, and more successful people; bouncing back quicker from personal setbacks and living longer. \nWHAT IS OPTIMIST DAY?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConfident people look to the future with hope\, and on Optimist Day we celebrate the volunteers who share their enthusiasm\, skills\, and talent to make that tomorrow a vibrant and peaceful one.  Optimist Day is celebrated throughout the world annually on the 1st Thursday of February.  This is a day where the world can be an optimist themselves in action\, plus join us in honoring Optimist clubs and members in their communities and worldwide for all they do year-round to promote efforts in bringing out the best in youth\, our communities\, and ourselves. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHAT CAN YOU DO TO CELEBRATE OPTIMIST DAY?  \n\n\nEncourage someone to pursue their dreams – since the day is all about developing leaders and encouraging people to think big\, show support to someone you know who might need some advice. Remind them of their potential.\nVolunteer at an optimist organization – to make an impact on the lives of many\, volunteer at an Optimist organization. Become part of the mission to “encourage positive thinking among people of all ages.”\nShare the Optimist Creed – with someone you know and talk about how it has made your life better\nPhone a friend or relative – talk about the sunny side of life\, and make them feel “there is something in them”\nGo for coffee or lunch with a friend – share stories\, and celebrate positive achievements and experiences.\nGet some fresh air and go outside – engage in outdoor activities like hiking\, or simply taking a stroll in a park to enjoy nature and its positive effects on mental health.\nDo a random act of kindness – Spread positivity by performing random acts of kindness. This could be as simple as complimenting a stranger\, paying for someone’s coffee\, or volunteering at a local charity.\nMindfulness and Meditation – practice mindfulness or meditation to stay grounded and reduce stress. Apps like Headspace or Calm can guide you through these practices.\nInspirational Movies/Books – watch an inspirational movie or read a book that promotes positivity and optimism.\nEngage in Hobbies – Dedicate some time to a hobby or activity you love. Whether it’s painting\, gardening\, or playing a musical instrument.  Doing what you enjoy can bring joy and fulfillment.\nPositive Affirmations – start your day with positive affirmations. Repeating positive statements about yourself can help build confidence and a positive outlook.\nStay Curious – Learn something new or explore a new hobby. Keeping your mind engaged and curious can bring excitement\, optimism\, and positivity to your life.\nGive a friend or family member a compliment \nLimit Negative Media – consuming too much negative news or social media can impact your mood. Try to balance it with uplifting and positive content.\nCelebrate Small Wins – Don’t wait for big achievements to celebrate. Acknowledge and appreciate the small successes along the way.\nSurround Yourself with Positive Influences – spend time with people who uplift and support you. Positive influences can help reinforce your optimistic outlook.\nReframe Negative Thoughts – when you catch yourself thinking negatively and less optimistic\, try to reframe those thoughts into something positive. DESCRIPTION:Attention all Students –  Here’s your chance to win a Scholarship!\nThe Optimist Club of Calgary is again sponsoring an Oratorical Scholarship Contest for the 2024-25 school year. The contest is open to students under 19 years of age on October 1\, 2024. Speakers will research\, write\, and present a four-to-five-minute speech on “How Optimism Has Guided Me Through Trying Times.”  We encourage students who have public speaking experience through school\, church\, Guides and Scouts\, 4-H\, Air Cadets\, and other organizations and training programs\, like Toastmasters Youth Leadership\, to enter. \nIMPORTANT – Entries will be accepted on a first-come basis starting at 8 am on February 13th\, 2025\, until contest positions are filled. The entry must include a completed application form\, signed by the entrant and their parent/guardian\, a copy of proof of age\, and a brief statement of the school\, grade attended\, and previous speaking experience. \nORATORICAL CONTEST APPLICATION FORM ==> 24-25_Oratorical_Application \nWhen completing the application\, please note the Sponsoring Club Name is the “Optimist Club of Calgary” and the Club Number is “13025”. \nINFORMATION ON THE OPTIMIST ORATORICAL SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST \nBeginning in 1928\, the Optimist International Oratorical Scholarship Contest has become the longest-running program of Optimist International  The contest is designed for young people to gain experience in public speaking and provide them with an opportunity to compete for multiple post-secondary scholarships with a pre-assigned topic. \nThere are various levels of competition as outlined below: \n\nOPTIMIST CLUB OF CALGARY IN PERSON CONTEST – Our club contest will be held on March 15th\, 2025 at the Fish Creek Library near Southcentre Mall in Calgary. 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place participants receive a cash award and a certificate.  1st and 2nd place participants get the opportunity to compete in the Zone Oratorical Contest mentioned below.\nALBERTA ZONE CONTEST – This contest will be held in April 2025 (date and location to be determined) and will include participants from across Alberta. 1st and 2nd place participants will receive a certificate and the opportunity to compete in the District Oratorical Contest mentioned below.\nDISTRICT 13 ORATORICAL CONTEST (Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, Montana\, and NW Wyoming) –  This contest will be held during the 3rd Quarter District Meeting on May 3rd\, 2025 starting at 10:30 AM at the Holiday Inn & Suites South in Red Deer\, Alberta.  There will be 6 participants competing at this event – two participants each from Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, and Montana/Northern Wyoming.  1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place participants will receive post-secondary scholarships from the Canadian Children’s Optimist Foundation of $2\,500\, $1\,500\, and $1\,000 respectively. The participant who places 1st will also be invited to the Great Plains Regional Oratorical Contest mentioned below.\nGREAT PLAINS REGIONAL CONTEST – This contest will be held on July 17\, 2025\, at Optimist International Headquarters in St. Louis\, Missouri.  The 1st place participant receives a $5\,000 scholarship and the opportunity to compete in the World Oratorical Contest mentioned below. SUMMARY:Introduction to Tournament Golf For Juniors Ages 6 to 12 on August 21st
DESCRIPTION:Attention Parents!             \nAre your kids (ages 6 to 12) learning how to play golf and interested in participating in a fun tournament?                         \nJoin us for the  2024 Optimist Introduction to Tournament Golf 9-hole Event at Collicut Siding Golf Course near Crossfield\, Alberta (just north of Airdrie) on  August 21st\, 2024.  This is a great opportunity for kids to play in the first golf tournament of their lives. \nContestants can have a family member as their caddie and/or coach.  They will walk the course using pull golf carts and play from the forward tees using winter rules. \nBOY AND GIRL AGE DIVISIONS: \nEach Division will be established with approximately the same number of contestants based on age and sex. DESCRIPTION:Attention all Calgary Optimists!\nJoin us for the 2024 Alberta Regional Oratorical Scholarship Contest on Sunday\, April 21st from 1:00 PM to approximately 3:30 PM at the Penhold Senior Drop-in Centre in Penhold\, Alberta (approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes north of Calgary).\nParticipants who placed 1st and 2nd place in each of the local Optimist Club Oratorical Contests across the province (including ours) will research\, write\, and deliver a four-to-five-minute speech at this event on the topic “How to Change the World With Optimism.” Family\, friends\, teachers\, and fellow students are welcome to join us and watch the competition. \nInformation about the upcoming Optimist District 13 and Optimist International World Oratorical Contests:   \nThe 1st and 2nd place winners from the above-mentioned Alberta Regional Contest will be invited to compete at the 2024 District Oratorical Scholarship Contest on Saturday\, May 4th\, 2024 during the 3rd Quarter AMS&NW District 13 Meeting at the Royal Hotel in Calgary starting at 1030 AM.  At this district contest\, there will be a total of six participants – two each from Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, and Montana.  The 1st place winner from this District Contest will be invited to compete in the 2024 Optimist International World Oratorical Contest on July 18th and 19th at Saint Louis University St. Louis\, Missouri\, USA. \nHistory of the Optimist International World Oratorical Scholarship Contest  \nFirst conducted in 1928\, this is the second most popular Optimist International Program. Nearly 2\,000 clubs participate in this program each year. The winners at the Club level receive medallions and Zone winners receive a plaque. SUMMARY:Introduction to Tournament Golf For Juniors Ages 6 to 12 on August 16th
DESCRIPTION:Attention Parents! \nAre your kids (ages 6 to 12) learning how to play golf and interested in participating in a fun tournament?                   \nJoin us for the  2023 Optimist Introduction to Tournament Golf 9-hole Event at Collicut Siding Golf Course near Crossfield\, Alberta (just north of Airdrie) on  August 16th\, 2023.  This is a great opportunity for kids to play in the first golf tournament of their lives. \nContestants can have a family member as their caddie and/or coach.  They will walk the course using pull golf carts and play from the forward tees using winter rules. \nBoy and Girl Age Divisions \nEach Division will be established with approximately the same number of contestants based on age and sex.
