DESCRIPTION:Attention all Optimist Members\, Contest Participants\, Family Members\, and Friends!\nHere’s your chance to show your support for young\, aspiring students!  Join us for the Optimist Club of Calgary’s 2026 Oratorical Scholarship Contest Competition on Saturday\, January 24th\, 2026\, from 12:30 PM to 4 PM.  Optimists\, family\, friends\, teachers\, fellow students\, and the general public are welcome to join us and watch the competition.   It is free.\nTen participants under the age of 19 who have already pre-registered will research\, write\, and present a four- to five-minute speech on the topic “The Moment I\nRealized I Belonged — My Definition of Community.” \nLocation:  Fish Creek Library (across the street on the east side of Southcenter Mall). \nThe top two participants in this contest will be invited to compete at the 2026 Alberta Regional Optimist Oratorical Contest\, which will be held sometime in April.  For more information about the Oratorical contests\, please see below. \nHope to see you on January 24th! \n \n  \nINFORMATION ON THE OPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL ORATORICAL SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST \nBeginning in 1928\, the Optimist International Oratorical Scholarship Contest has become the longest-running program of Optimist International. The contest is designed for young people to gain experience in public speaking and provide them with an opportunity to compete for multiple post-secondary scholarships with a pre-assigned topic. \nThere are various levels of competition as outlined below: \n\nOPTIMIST CLUB OF CALGARY IN-PERSON CONTEST – Our club contest will be held on January 24th\, 2026\, at the Fish Creek Library.  1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place participants receive a cash award and a certificate.  1st and 2nd place participants get the opportunity to compete in the Zone Oratorical Contest mentioned below.\nALBERTA ZONE CONTEST – This contest will be held in April 2026 (date and location to be determined) and will include participants from across Alberta. 1st and 2nd place participants will receive a certificate and the opportunity to compete in the District Oratorical Contest mentioned below.\nDISTRICT 13 ORATORICAL CONTEST (Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, Montana\, and NW Wyoming) –  This contest will be held during the 3rd Quarter District Meeting on May 16th\, 2026\, in Saskatoon (location yet to be determined).  There will be 6 participants competing at this event – two participants each from Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, and Montana/Northern Wyoming.  1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place participants will receive post-secondary scholarships from the Canadian Children’s Optimist Foundation of $2\,500\, $1\,500\, and $1\,000\, respectively. The participant who places 1st will also be invited to the Great Plains Regional Oratorical Contest mentioned below.\nGREAT PLAINS REGIONAL CONTEST – This contest will be held in July 2026 at Optimist International Headquarters in St. Louis\, Missouri.  The 1st place participant receives a $5\,000 scholarship and the opportunity to compete in the World Oratorical Contest mentioned below. DESCRIPTION:Attention all Students –  Here’s your chance to win a Scholarship!\nCONTEST APPLICATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED                 \nThe Optimist Club of Calgary is excited to announce the return of its Essay Scholarship Contest for the 2025–26 school year!  This inspiring opportunity is open to students who are under 19 years of age as of October 1\, 2025. \nTo enter\, students are invited to craft a 700–800-word essay on the theme: “How My Acts of Service Help Me Understand What My Community Means to Me.” So sharpen those pencils\, share your story\, and let your creative writing skills shine! \nSubmissions will be accepted until January 10\, 2026. \nTo apply\, download the Oratorical Contest Application described below\, complete it\, and submit it via e-mail to Bob Steele\, Essay Contest Chair\, at ironmanb@telusplanet.net with the Subject “Essay Contest”. SUMMARY:Optimist Oratorical Contest
DESCRIPTION:Accepting Applications from now to February 24th\, 2023 \nThe Optimist Club of Calgary is again sponsoring the Optimist International Oratorical Scholarship Contest for the 2022-23 school year.  The contest is open to students who are under 19 years of age on October 1\, 2022. Speakers will research\, write and present a four-to-five-minute speech on the topic “Discovering the Optimism within Me” at a date and location in Calgary yet to be determined. We encourage students who have public speaking experience through school\, church\, Guides and Scouts\, 4-H\, Air Cadets\, and other organizations and training programs to enter. \nAn Oratorical Contest Application containing all rules and other information can be found by clicking on the following link: \nhttps://www.optimist.org/documents/2023/programs/22-23_Oratorical_Application.pdf \nFor more information on the Oratorical Contest\, check out our website at https://optimistyyc.org/contests/ or the Optimist International Website by CLICKING HERE. \nEntries will be accepted on a first-come basis until February 24\, 2023. The contest will have a maximum of ten contestants.  The actual speaking event will be held in Calgary sometime in mid-March\, with a date yet to be determined. \nEntries for the contest should be submitted by e-mail to Bob Steele (Essay and Oratorical Contest Chair) at ironmanb@telusplanet.net  with the Subject “Oratorical Contest”. The entry must include a completed application form\, signed by the entrant and his/her parent\, a copy of proof of age\, and a brief statement of the school\, grade attended\, and previous speaking experience. \nThe Optimist Club will judge the local students’ speeches based on content and presentation to determine the top winners. Winners will receive AWARDS and the winning speeches will be sent to the Zone level\, and possibly the District level for the opportunity to win college scholarships. Winners of the District level will be eligible to compete in a regional competition in St. Louis\, Missouri\, at Saint Louis University. \nWinners of the regional contests will compete in the World Championship also held at Saint Louis University. Students could possibly win up to $22\,500 in scholarships! \n

SUMMARY:Optimist Essay Contest - NOW CLOSED
DESCRIPTION:The Optimist Club of Calgary is again sponsoring the Optimist International Essay Scholarship Contest for the 2022-23 school year.  The contest is open to students who are under 19 years of age on October 1\, 2022. Students must write a 700-to-800-word essay on the topic “Who is an Everyday Hero That Brings Out the Optimism in You?” \nThe Optimist Club of Calgary Essay Contest is now closed. Nine students have entered. Results will be posted on this website after February 15.  \nEntries were accepted on a first come\, first entered basis. All entries were acknowledged on receipt by the Optimist Club of Calgary. \nThe Optimist Club of Calgary will give cash prizes of $100\, $75 and $50 to the three best essays entered into the contest. The best essay will be forwarded to a second contest in which the best essays from all the Optimist clubs in the Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, Montana\, and Northern Wyoming District are entered. The best essay from this group will receive a $2\,500 post-secondary scholarship provided by the Canadian Children’s Optimist Foundation. \nFor more information about the Essay Contest\, visit the Optimist International Website.
