SUMMARY:Optimist Oratorical Contest
DESCRIPTION:Accepting Applications from now to February 24th\, 2023 \nThe Optimist Club of Calgary is again sponsoring the Optimist International Oratorical Scholarship Contest for the 2022-23 school year.  The contest is open to students who are under 19 years of age on October 1\, 2022. Speakers will research\, write and present a four-to-five-minute speech on the topic “Discovering the Optimism within Me” at a date and location in Calgary yet to be determined. We encourage students who have public speaking experience through school\, church\, Guides and Scouts\, 4-H\, Air Cadets\, and other organizations and training programs to enter. \nAn Oratorical Contest Application containing all rules and other information can be found by clicking on the following link: \nhttps://www.optimist.org/documents/2023/programs/22-23_Oratorical_Application.pdf \nFor more information on the Oratorical Contest\, check out our website at https://optimistyyc.org/contests/ or the Optimist International Website by CLICKING HERE. \nEntries will be accepted on a first-come basis until February 24\, 2023. The contest will have a maximum of ten contestants.  The actual speaking event will be held in Calgary sometime in mid-March\, with a date yet to be determined. \nEntries for the contest should be submitted by e-mail to Bob Steele (Essay and Oratorical Contest Chair) at ironmanb@telusplanet.net  with the Subject “Oratorical Contest”. The entry must include a completed application form\, signed by the entrant and his/her parent\, a copy of proof of age\, and a brief statement of the school\, grade attended\, and previous speaking experience. \nThe Optimist Club will judge the local students’ speeches based on content and presentation to determine the top winners. Winners will receive AWARDS and the winning speeches will be sent to the Zone level\, and possibly the District level for the opportunity to win college scholarships. Winners of the District level will be eligible to compete in a regional competition in St. Louis\, Missouri\, at Saint Louis University. \nWinners of the regional contests will compete in the World Championship also held at Saint Louis University. Students could possibly win up to $22\,500 in scholarships! \n

DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to have Fariborz Birjandian as our speaker.\n \nFariborz Birjandian is the CEO of CCIS (Calgary Catholic Immigration Society) a non-profit organization which provides settlement and integration services to all immigrants and refugees in Southern Alberta. \nFrom the local to the international level\, Fariborz Birjandian has served on committees\, boards and task forces related to immigration\, refugees\, diversity\, equal rights and the cultural arts. He became a refugee when he left his home country of Iran with his family in 1987. \nHis involvement and work with refugees began in 1987 and has continued these past 30+ years. He initially began this work with the UNHCR and\, once settled in Canada\, he volunteered with several organizations including the Red Cross and CCIS. \nIn his role as CEO with CCIS\, he leads 300 staff members and 1\,600 volunteers as they deliver approximately 80 programs and services designed to aid the settlement and integration of immigrants and refugees in Calgary and its surrounding communities. He has been instrumental in designing and initiating numerous methodologies related to settlement and integration including the UNHCR Settlement Handbook that is used nationally and internationally. \nHe has received numerous awards and recognitions for his community involvement\, and for his commitment to ensuring that institutions\, advisory groups and all levels of government work to recognize the needs and challenges faced by newcomers\, promote the creation of welcoming and engaged communities\, and recognize and celebrate diversity. \nDinner is available at 6 PM for those who wish to have it. DESCRIPTION:The Optimist Club of Calgary is again sponsoring the Optimist International Essay Scholarship Contest for the 2022-23 school year.  The contest is open to students who are under 19 years of age on October 1\, 2022. Students must write a 700-to-800-word essay on the topic “Who is an Everyday Hero That Brings Out the Optimism in You?” \nThe Optimist Club of Calgary Essay Contest is now closed. Nine students have entered. Results will be posted on this website after February 15.  \nEntries were accepted on a first come\, first entered basis. All entries were acknowledged on receipt by the Optimist Club of Calgary. \nThe Optimist Club of Calgary will give cash prizes of $100\, $75 and $50 to the three best essays entered into the contest. The best essay will be forwarded to a second contest in which the best essays from all the Optimist clubs in the Alberta\, Saskatchewan\, Montana\, and Northern Wyoming District are entered. The best essay from this group will receive a $2\,500 post-secondary scholarship provided by the Canadian Children’s Optimist Foundation. \nFor more information about the Essay Contest\, visit the Optimist International Website.
